You have several ways to visit Rome, the best is by walking.
If you are in the city center or can get there by underground/train, you can make many lovely trips and take loads of nice pictures too, just walking around.
It's better if you plan an itinerary you can make by foot and then make the last visit close to an underground station or a bus stop. Doing so you'll have the chanche to see the monuments and places you want to see and get back to your bed or shower without too much trouble. Remember that Rome is really full of things to see and even if it looks like everything is pretty much in the same area, each area can be huge!
Rome is a city with not many criminal problems, but of course you have to be aware of pickpockets, cause there are many on the undergrounds and buses, especially during spring and summer. You'll find some policemen in the most touristic places, but if you are not close to those areas, it could be difficult to find them. Always ask the price first, romans are nice and friendly, but some of them try to get advantage on your difficulties with the change.
And remember: the most visited places not always are the best, especially if they're croweded and you have to wait hours to get in.
There are many places in Rome still undiscovered from main tourists, it's up to you to look around, and find a new sight of the eternal city!
